Mississippian Indians

      The Mississippian Indians evolved from the Woodland Indians. They existed between 1,000 A.D- 1,500 A.D. They hunted small animals such as Rabbits. The Mississippians mainly grew crops and fished. They invented Celts. Celts are tools used to tend garden. The primary mode of transportation was the canoe.

Woodland Indians

The Woodland Indians evolved from the Archaic Indians. They existed between 1,000 B.C - 1,000 A.D. These Indians hunted Deer, Moose, Turkey and other small animals. They also grew crops such as corn. The Woodlands invented the bow and arrow. The bow and arrow was a weapon that was more powerful than the atlatl and spear. The use of pottery spread across the eastern woodlands. Pottery was first invented by the Archaic Indians.

Archaic Indians

The Archaic Indians evolved from the Paleo Indians. They existed between 8,000 B.C - 1,000 B.C. The Archaic hunted deer, elk, bighorn sheep, rabbits, and rodents. They occasionally gathered wild plant foods. These Indians used projectile points on their lances, spears, darts and other weapons used for hunting. They also used a tool called Metate. A Metate is a stone tool that is used for grinding hard materials such as nuts and seeds.

             The Paleo Indians are known as the first Americans. They still existed between 10,000 B.C and 8,000 B.C. The animals at that time were the Mammoth, Mastodan, Sloth, and anything edible! The Paleo weapons were usually made out of wood or stone.  They invented the Atlatl; a weapon that uses leverage to achieve a greater speed in dart throwing.The Paleo Indians also used Clovis points (Clovis was another name for the Paleo) to hunt animals. Clovis points are distinctive fluted spear points.
